VietNamNet Bridge – Xa Van The, a village leader in Hoa Binh is famous for finishing secondary school at the age of 75.

When asked why he decided to go to school as an old man, he explained that his grandson twice failed to join the army because he did not have his secondary school diploma. He felt sad to see many children lazy and idle. After thinking for a while, he petitioned authorities for permission to open classes right in the mountain village and persuade local children to go to school.
In 2001, an education continuation class opened for 96 students. Many children finished the class after two years. They could join the army and were admitted to the Communist Party. Some also continued studying at higher levels.
The was still not satisfied because many children still refused to go to school. He decided to attend classes with the children to set an example.
At first, everyone thought that The was just joking about his studies. But at age 73, he went to school every day like his classmates aged 13-14. The was elected as the “monitor” for his class. If someone wanted to drop out, he went to their home to persuade them to come back. If someone had difficulties, he gathered everyone together and discussed measures to help them.
After two years, The obtained his high school diploma at age 75.
“If you want to persuade someone to do something, you should do it first,” The remarked.
