The final months of 2008 and 2009 were a very difficult time for Vietnamese businesses, many of which had to cut the labor force to save expenses. This can be seen in the fact that the total number of workers decreased significantly from two years ago to 1,020,000.

The total revenue of enterprises in VNR 500 in 2009 increased by nearly 50 percent over 2008, despite the current difficulties faced the national economy.

The profits also showed a considerable increase of 30 percent in comparison with 2008 and four percent in comparison with 2007.

The proportion of enterprises with pre-tax profit of over 100 billion dong is relatively high, 36 percent, up from 33 percent in 2008. Meanwhile, 16.7 percent of enterprises have pretax profits of between 50 billion dong and 100 billion dong.

However, the number of enterprises with negative profit is also considerably high, 12.8 percent, while it was five percent only one year ago.
