To be recognised as a world geological park by UNESCO, the documentation must obtain at least 1000 points, including at least 600 points for scientific aspects and other points for preservation, education and tourism value.
Ma Ngoc Giang, the director of the management board of the Ha Giang stone plateau, noted that this is the first defense of the documents at a UNESCO conference, with the assistance of experts from the Institute for Geological and Mineral Sciences and the Vietnam UNESCO Committee.
UNESCO has recognized 69 geological parks in the world, including only one in Southeast Asia (Malaysia). Vietnam is the second country from the region to request UNESCO recognition of a geological park.
On April 9, UNESCO sent a group of independent scientists from France and China to Ha Giang to survey the stone plateau.
French expert Lepvrier Claude told Tuoi Tre newspaper that he had read the documentation before he went to Ha Giang, but that he could not have imagined the real beauty and value of this plateau.
