“Among the 25 A/H1N1 flu fatalities, 60 per cent were female patients, 25 per cent of which were pregnant women,” said Nga.
Central Da Nang City logged its second swine flu fatality when a 20-month-old girl also died of the A/H1N1 virus yesterday, the municipal Health Department deputy director Nguyen Ut announced.
The patient, a resident of Nguyen Du street in Hai Chau district, suffered from coughing and high fever from Monday last week but was only sent to a local private clinic.
Two days later, she was admitted to Da Nang Hospital and treated with Tamiflu as prescribed by the Ministry of Health.
Ut said the source of infection had not been confirmed, with the official cause of death formally to be confirmed by the health ministry today.
At the meeting, the ministry reported a draft plan for vaccination against A/H1N1 flu, in which a priority would be given to 10 densely-populated cities and provinces most heavily affected by the pandemic.
It is expected that more than 900,000 people who belong to high-risk groups will be prioritised for A/H1N1 vaccinations. About 1.5 million people in 20 provinces and cities will be vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu virus. If necessary, about 3.3 million selected people will be vaccinated against A/H1N1 flu prevention nation-wide.
“Priorities for vaccination will be given to health staff, pregnant women and people suffering from chronic diseases,” said Nga.
The World Health Organisation reported last Thursday that the organisation has put Viet Nam on the list of nations to be provided with A/H1N1 vaccines.
According to the health ministry, from now until 2010, the WHO will supply enough vaccines for 2 per cent of Viet Nam’s population, or more than 1 million vaccine doses.
The amount may increase but will not amount to more than 10 per cent of the population. The donated vaccines are expected to be sent to Viet Nam in the last quarter of this year.
The Ministry of Health has also bought between 500,000 and 1 million doses of the vaccine from WHO-recognised pharmaceutical companies.
