Toll stations on Hanoi’s airport highways – are they legal?

Last updated: Thursday, November 5, 2009 |

Confusion surrounds toll stations on the road between Hanoi and its airport – which of the toll stations are legal, and which aren’t?

Yesterday, the chief of the Vietnam Road Management Agency said the agency is set to inspect all road toll stations on Thang Long – Noi Bai highway after four were named as illegal several days ago.

Since November 23, the repair of the three-storey Thang Long Bridge has caused serious traffic jams on the Thang Long – Noi Bai Airport highway. While dealing with the jams, Hanoi traffic inspectors came across four illegal road toll stations.

According to traffic inspectors, people have had to pay fees twice when they travel on this road.

However, the two companies that control road tolls argue that the four stations are sub-stations installed on branch roads of the highway to ensure all fees are collected. They say these sub-stations have been operating for many years, under the permission of the Transportation Ministry.

Mai Van Duc, chief of the Vietnam Road Management Agency on November 4 has now decided to inspect all local road toll stations to clear up the confusion.

The inspection is supported by Transportation Minister Ho Nghia Dung. “In my opinion, there is no problem with the major station, but we will have to check the remaining ones,” Dungsaid.
