Teen smashes pool records

VnnNews – Teenager Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen broke five national records as HCM City cruised through the swimming championship at the National Sports Games.

Athletes from HCM City have already won six gold, three silver and seven bronze medals.

Tuyen, 16, finished the women’s 400m medley in 4 minutes 57.23sec in the opening day at the Ha Noi Aquatic Centre.

She shaved off 1min 52.16sec from the old record set by Vo Thi Thanh Vy in 2005.

She then set a new record in the 100m backstroke at 1:02:75, beating the old record held by Hanoian Bui Thi Phuong Nhung, who clocked a 1:04.87 four years ago.

The HCM City-born swimmer did better in the second day, when she set national records in the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 100m medley.

She swam the 100m freestyle in 56.63 to surpass her teammate, An Do Hanh’s record, by 2sec.

In the 50m butterfly, the teenager finished at 28.25sec to break the old record of 28.92. Tuyen also handled the 100m medley with a time of 1:03.30.

Hai Phong-based Nguyen Huu Viet has remained unbeaten since 2005 in Viet Nam in the men’s 100m breaststroke and snagged a gold with a time of 1:00:75. The championships, which drew 60 swimmers from 14 teams, ends Tuesday.
