Taking a plane to the shops

VnnNews – Overseas shopping trips are now becoming more popular for the richer, more mobile, Vietnamese.

Thailand, the favourite destination for Vietnamese original goods hunter

Flying out in the morning and returning in the afternoon -Vietnamese shoppers are increasingly heading for Singapore and Hong Kong in particular.

Thanh Son in district 10 of HCM City goes abroad once a month, to ‘hunt’ for goods. Sometimes he visits Akihabara electronics market in Japan. Sometimes he goes to Sim Lim trade centre in Singapore to seek ‘original goods’ not available on the domestic market.

“What for?” – “I will use them if I like them. But, if someone else likes the goods, I will sell to them,’ Son said.

“There are, at the market, a lot of original goods which are selling at very attractive prices. You just need to have money,” he said.

Son has become the well known supplier of personally imported goods in HCM City. People call Son and place orders. He flies abroad to purchase the ordered goods and delivers them to clients within days.

Unlike Son, Khoa, 50, also in HCM City, is flying abroad to go shopping not for resale but just so he can have ‘unique products’ that others don’t. The products Khoa always purchases when he travels abroad are digital cameras, music players and headphones.

He boasts that one time a camera distributor held a press conference to introduce a new camera product and he attended with the camera having purchased it already in Singapore.

Khoa always travels to Singapore to hunt for goods and stays there for several days. Meanwhile, Phuoc, another original goods hunter, said that he has never stayed in Singapore for more than two days, and prefers returning home within the day.

However, Phuoc said that though goods are cheaper by 30-40 percent in Singapore, he only purchases goods which are not available in Vietnam. He said that clients will not be able to enjoy the warranty service, because it will be costly to send products abroad.

Phuoc says that people should purchase digital products abroad, but should purchase information technology (IT) products in Vietnam. He added that IT products are available in Vietnam very soon after they appear on other markets

Meanwhile, Khoa, though admitting inconvenience when sending products abroad for warranty, said that he would rather bear the inconvenience than purchasing goods in Vietnam at ‘exorbitant’ high prices.
