The 39-week pregnant woman was rushed to Binh Dinh General Hospital with acute respiratory problems, a high fever and severe pneumonia.
The woman died on October 15. Tests confirmed her as being infected with the A/H1N1 flu virus later.
“Pregnant women exhibiting flu symptoms should immediately attended clinics or hospitals for examinations or treatment in order to minimise the fatality risks,” said Director of the Preventive Medicine and Environment under the Ministry of Health Nguyen Huy Nga.
Speaking about the A/H1N1 flu fatality rate in Viet Nam, Director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Nguyen Tran Hien said that it was lower than the seasonal flu fatality rate.
“Twenty-four fatalities among more than 10,000 cases of A/H1N1 infection indicates a fatality rate of 0.23 per cent, which is relatively low”, said Hien.
“Fifteen flu surveillance sites in the nation-wide monitoring network have reported 100 per cent of flu infection were A/H1N1,” explained Hien.
“However, the normal flu rate may be ten times higher than reported A/H1N1 cases,” Hien added.
Director of the National Institute of Infectious and Tropical Diseases Nguyen Van Kinh said that the institute had received about 600 patients daily for examination and treatment, many being primary school children and infants younger than six years.
