Superstorm damages lines – north loses 500 MW of electricity

Last updated: Tuesday, September 29, 2009 |

VnnNews – EVN has warned that the north may lack 500 MW of electricity since the north-south was brought down by typhoon Ketsana.

Now, the northern region will have to limit its electricity capacity to 400-500 MW in the morning peak hours and in the afternoon of September 29 until the smooth operation of the 500 KV transmission line resumes.

The 500KV north-south transmission line with the length of 1,487 metres from Hoa Binh province in the northern mountainous area to HCM City in the south, became operational in mid 1990s.

The transmission line was built up with the aim of sharing electricity nationally from the hydropower plant complexes.

In the central region, the superstorm has damaged many 220KV and 100 KV transmission lines, including the 220 KV Hoa Khanh-Hue line, Quy Nhon-Pleiku, 110KV Da Nang-Hoa Khanh, Da Nang – Lien Tri – district 3, Doc Soi-Quang Ngai and many transformer stations, thus badly affecting the supply of electricity in the areas from Nghe An, Ha Tinh to Phu Yen provinces.

EVN, in the announcement, said that the group is joining forces with the local authorities and local people in the storm stricken to deal with the troubles. However, it has warned that the electricity supply to localities may still be influenced by the storm
