Student scrap rallies school violence prevention

VnnNews – Most educators have expressed concern about escalating school violence in Vietnam.

Nguyen Tung Lam, Headmaster of Dinh Tien Hoang High Shool in Hanoi, is well known for leading his school to convert “naughty” students.  Lam maintains that the condemnation should be directed not only at the students involved, but also the people watched their friends fighting and filmed the scuffle.

Dan Tri: You have experience in dealing with problem students and you are an experienced psychologist. What do you think after viewing the clip?

Nguyen Tung Lam: I felt so sad as I watched the video. I think it is quite normal that students may have conflicts at the secondary and high school level, because this is the normal psychology of growing students.  The abnormal element here is that a female student beat another one and people around did nothing except watch and film the altercation. We need to condemn this insensibility.

Dan Tri: Students nowadays have better living and learning conditions. Why do they still fight each other? What are the reasons?

Lam: It’s because of unsuitable methods of education by the family, school and society, which produces students who do not have sufficient awareness about learning, relations between students, and with teachers.

I think that now we need to condemn this type of behavior and change our way of educating students, especially female students. They need to be educated in the so called “femininity.”

Nowadays, students fight each other for many reasons, even for minor disagreements. I think that we need to teach them to respect each other and teach them altruism.

As you may know my school is famous for gathering students from many places with strong personalities. We must pay attention to teaching morality. We teach them the value of life, living skills, negotiation skills, and behavioral skills regularly as a part of our teaching curriculum.

Dan Tri: What do you do if your students fight each other?

Lam:  In these cases, we first intervene to reconcile them, otherwise they will continue beating each other. After that, we educate the students, so that they understand that fighting is not acceptable at school. We also pay compliments to both sides.

Dan Tri: Who do you think must take the most responsibility in cases of conflicts?

Lam: Families and schools. Schools need better education programs, while families need to care more about their children. I think that families should learn a lesson from this event and use it to educate their children.

As far as I know, the percentage of students living apart from their families has increased. At my school, for example, the figure is about 20 percent in some classes. As the students do not receive family care and they are enduring the hard pressures of life, they sometimes act out.

In other countries of the world, heavy punishments have been imposed on delinquent behavior. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, the discipline is much lighter.

I also want to emphasize society’s responsibility here. Students do not have any places for entertainment after hard lessons and they can easily behave in spontaneous and uncontrollable ways.

The latest events related to the student fight video clip:

* On March 13, 2010, the Ministry of Education and Training released a dispatch, requesting local education departments to report on the struggle against school violence.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Nghia stated that she was shocked and terrified when watching the clip. She believes the biggest problem revealed by the video was the indifference of the onlookers. She has ordered the Students Affairs Department and Hanoi education departments to locate the students with the help of the police, if necessary.

* On March 12, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Tran Quang Quy signed a document for education departments on fighting and violence and ending school violence among students.

The Ministry required department reports prior to March 30, 2010.

* According to VnExpress, the female victim is a student at a school in Hai Ba Trung district. On the school forum they wrote that the student is from 10A13 class. Her attacker was a student from another class and the person who filmed the battle was a male student.

The teacher of 10A3 class said that she received a text message that her students were fighting each other. When she called the parents, she heard that everything was okay again.

On March 11, the teacher, who thought that the quality of the clip was not so good, decided to talk with the student who she believed was the victim.  The student said that she was the victim in the video clip.
