Shark hunt yet to locate real culprit

Last updated: Monday, March 8, 2010 |

A Phu Yen fisherman on March 6 netted a 500kg-shark in Binh Dinh province, where over ten people suffered shark attacks in January 2010.

The 500kg shark caught on March 5.

Nguyen Huu Hao, Deputy Director of Binh Dinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, acknowledged that this shark is not the one that attacked people. Its jaw is 50cm wide while the culprit’s jaw is estimated to be 17cm.

Experts from Nha Trang’s Oceanography Institute also agreed that this species of shark doesn’t live near the shore, so it was not the shark guilty of the recent attacks. However, they said that the appearance of sharks in the Quy Nhon sea is abnormal and may be explained by pollution or the weather changes.

The fish was sold for 10 million dong.

Previously, another Phu Yen fisherman caught a 1-ton shark. It was sold for 30 million dong in Quy Nhon. The buyer chopped the giant fish into small pieces for sale, but he had to bury the fish because no one dared to buy it. Many believed that the shark was Ca Ong (whale) – a holy fish.

In early January, over ten people were bitten by a shark in the sea by Quy Nhon. The province offers 10 million dong to whomever catches the shark.
