Prices rise as computer equipment and mobile phones in short supply

Computer equipment and mobile phone prices are on the rise as sellers are suffering a product shortage.

Truong Huy in District 3 of HCM City said he was looking for a 3G Nokia 2730 mobile phone. However, both The Gioi Di Dong and Vien Thong A, the two biggest mobile phone distributors could neither sell him the product or say when they might be available.

 

Huy believes distributors refused to sell the mobile phones believing they would be able to sell them later at a higher price.

 

Meanwhile, Mai Trinh, an executive of The Gioi Di Dong, denied this, saying the model Huy wanted is a new one that they did not import in large quantities.

 

However, Huy has his reasons to doubt distributors do not want to sell mobile phones at this moment, because prices are still on the rise.

Elsewhere Saigon Tiep Thi newspaper reports the prices of computer components and peripheral equipments (RAM, printer, LCD screen and USB) have all increased by 30 percent. RAM, for example, has become twice as expensive than in August while laser HP printers have run out.

 

Retailers believe the current price situation will continue until the end of the year.

 

Le Hoang Son, representative of Kingston in Vietnam, says they no lnger manufacture RAM DDR2, therefore the price of the product has been increasing.

 

Thu from HP Vietnam says the short supply is not only seen in Vietnam, but in other countries in the world as well, because producers have cut production as a result of the economic crisis.

 

Meanwhile, Nguyen Canh Hien from Back Khoa Computer in HCM City said that producers are now busy developing new versions of products and they are giving priority to countries who place big orders – not small markets like Vietnam.

 

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in July, Vietnam imported 72,600 LCD screens, down by 15.6 percent over the previoius month, while it imported 50,000 laptops, down by 12.6 percent. Distributors say imports have decreased not because of lower demand, but because producers do not meet demands of Vietnamese importers.
