Over 2 tons of wildlife and animal bones seized

Last updated: Thursday, March 11, 2010 |

The bones were seized at the Lao Bao border gate in Quang Tri on March 7 and are part of illegal wildlife trade between Laos and Vietnam.

Among them were a body of a tiger (95kg) and a black panther (27kg) kept in ice boxes in addition to the dried skeletons of buffaloes and goats as well as the horns of bulls.

These things were carried by a lorry from Nghe An. The driver declared that a man in Savanakhet province, Laos, hired him to transport these things to Dong Hoi, Quang Binh province for 5 million dong.

According to statistics, around 3,000 tons of wild animal meat are consumed and exported via the border with China annually, but experts said that this figure is just the tip of the iceberg.

The Education for Nature (ENV) said that in recent years, wildlife trafficking and trade has increased in the number of cases and the seriousness. ENV set up a hotline to protect wildlife in 2005 and so far, it has recorded more than 1,600 wild animal trading cases.
