Mother, child care hospital gets grant

The Japanese Government has given Viet Nam 461 million Yen in non-refundable aid to help the country improve health care services for mothers and new-borns.

The funding, delivered to the Ha Noi-based National Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynaecology, was made following the Note of Exchange on Grant Aid previously inked by Japanese Ambassador to Viet Nam Mitsuo Sakaba and Minister of Health Nguyen Quoc Trieu.

The grant is expected to help the hospital respond to the increasing demand for obstetrics and gynaecology healthcare and provide more extensive technical training to lower-level medical institutions.

According to a preparatory survey conducted by a Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) survey team, there are not enough medical facilities that provide gynaecological healthcare in Viet Nam, a country where women in the age group of 15 – 19 make up nearly 21 per cent of the total female population.

The project will provide the hospital with modern equipment, especially for the delivery, neonatal and examination departments, according to the hospital’s director Nguyen Viet Tien.
