MOET wants teachers to give more comments and fewer marks

Last updated: Thursday, February 11, 2010 |

VietNamNet Bridge – MOET has decided that teachers will give less marks and give more comments.

With the new scheme, the overall-mark which shows primary school students’ study results will be decided by the mark of the year-end test only. Currently, the overall-mark is calculated by the average mark in both the first and second semester.

If the year-end test shows abnormal results, which is different from teachers’ assessment about students, students will be able to have three more tests maximum, the result of which will show the actual learning capability of students.

Explaining the new scheme, MOET said that students’ learning capability will be assessed mainly by comments, while teachers will not have to give marks many times.

“Teachers nowadays have the habit of giving marks to students which is unnecessary in many cases,” commented Hoang Thi Tan, Deputy Education Sub-department of Long Bien District in Hanoi.

Pham Xuan Tien, Head of the Primary Education Division under the Hanoi Education and Training Department, has warned that the new method will force teachers to work harder and keep a closer watch over students.

“Giving marks is the easies thing teachers can do,” Tien said “However, under the new scheme, teachers should not give marks in every teaching hour. If they give marks, they also need to give an explanation,” T ien said.

Nevertheless, it seems teachers and students still like giving and receiving marks. Parents ask children everyday about the school marks, because they believe that marks can show their children’s learning capability. Meanwhile, a database of students’ marks, in the eyes of many teachers, is sufficient information.

Nguyen Thi Hue, teacher of La Thanh Primary School in Hanoi related that she gives marks every day, and she gives marks three times a day, on average.

Under the current regulations, teachers give marks two times a week, but in fact, teachers give marks more regularly.

“If we give comments, students will forget comments immediately. It would be better to give marks,” Hue said.

According to the teacher, with the new method, teachers will not have to spend as much time on calculating marks for students. However, teachers will still need to give marks to reflect student progress over longer periods.

Sharing the same view, Vu Thi Oanh, Teacher of Cat Linh Primary School in Hanoi said that only by giving marks, will teachers be able to know how students receive new knowledge.

Meanwhile, teachers worry that they will not have enough time to give comments every time when they give marks.
