This is an exhibition of seven Vietnamese and overseas Vietnamese artists sharing their thoughts on how to change daily life.
The event will close at the end of March.
Prevent “bad phenomena” at festivals
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has ordered provincial departments of culture to control upcoming festivals to prevent damage from unsavory elements and events.

The Ministry asked departments of culture, sports and tourism to manage festivals more strictly in order to prevent negative phenomena, punish violators and take strong steps to prevent visitors from spreading small money through pagodas and relics.
Popular festivals are usual subject to problems like poor security, overpriced services, disguised gambling, begging, and superstitious practices.
Thang Long Royal Citadel to open for public
Upon the agreement of Deputy PM Nguyen Sinh Hung, the Thang Long Royal Citadel will be open for visitors in 2010 to celebrate the 1000th Thang Long-Hanoi anniversary.
The Thang Long Royal Citadel includes the archaeologic site at 18 Hoang Dieu Street and the ancient citadel, totaling over 18,000 square meters.
In the last five years, excavations at 18 Hoang Dieu have unearthed many architectural works, proving the existence of Thang Long for nearly 1300 years, from the pre-Thang Long period (the 7th-9th centuries) to the Dinh – pre-Le dynasties (the 10th century) to the Thang Long – Hanoi period with the Ly-Tran-Le-Nguyen dynasties from 1010 to the early 20th century.
Hanoi has sent documents to UNESCO to ask for recognition of the royal citadel as a world cultural heritage site.
Sylvie Gazeau and friends’ concert
At the invitation of the French Consulate General in HCM City, famous French violinist Sylvie Gazeau will perform at the HCM City Music Conservatory at 112 Nguyen Du, District 1 at 8pm, March 10.

The show will also feature another French artist, Jerome Lefrance, plus Vietnamese brothers Nguyen Huu Nguyen and Nguyen Huu Khoi Nam as special guests of Gazeau.
They will play famous works for the violin by composers such as Schubert, Shostakovitch, Boccherini, Mozart and Dvorak.
Record painting – where to go?
Nguyen Doan Son, the artist who created “Hanoi, Defense Lines and Flowers”, the largest historical painting in Vietnam (measuring 9.6 x 2.25m) is seeking a home for the piece.

After eight days of display at Van Mieu Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature), the painter had to move the painting. The painter noted that it is very difficult to rent a big workshop to store such a large artwork. No museum or library has agreed to take it.
Doan Son completed this painting in three years, 2007-2010. The sketch of this painting won the “Bui Xuan Phai Award for Love for Hanoi” in 2008.
Short film competition for Vietnamese directors
On the occasion of the 5th Cinema Symposium held at UCLA University (USA) on April 18, 2010, the Vietnamese-American Art and Culture Association and the Association for Culture and Linguistics has launched a short filmmaking competition for Vietnamese and overseas Vietnamese directors.
The films sent to the competition must be less than 5 minute long. The works must be about Vietnam, with English subtitles. A director can send several works, accompanied by separate applications for each film downloaded from the website, VietFilmFest.com. The films must be uploaded to youtube.com and the URLs must be sent to VietFilmFest@yahoo.com by March 15, 2010.
The organizing board will choose five short films to screen in the final round at the Cinema Symposium. The best film will selected by vote and awarded on the same day.
The competition aims to advertise films made by Vietnamese or overseas Vietnamese people and also films about Vietnamese people.
Hue artist focus on women
The first is an exhibition by female artists from Hue, organized at 26 Le Loi Street in Hue. Twenty-eight women have contributed 36 artworks of various materials.

Most of the works focus on landscapes, flowers and human.
The second exhibition, entitled “Love from Men”, gathers paintings by male artists who depict their love and respect for women.
The two events will remain open until March 15.
Concert commemorates Chopin’s 200th birthday
A special concert in commemoration of the 200th birthday of talented Polish composer Federich Chopin will start at 8pm on March 12 in the Hanoi Opera House.
The event, organised by the Vietnam National Conservatoire, will draw the participation of master of art Joanna Lawrynowicz from Poland.
She will perform well-known pieces of music marking the brilliant successes of musician Chopin, such as Fantaisie Impromptu Op.66 Cis moll, Valse No.2 b-minor Op.69, Grande Valse Brillante Es-dur Op.18, Polonaise g-moll, Op.posh, Polonaise B-flat, Op.posh, Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise E flat major, Op.22.
Hanoi Craft Week 2010 held to honour thousand years of cultures
The Hanoi Craft Week 2010, entitled “A thousand years of quintessence” is taking place at the Friendship Cultural Palace in Hanoi with the participation of 500 craft villages.
The fair, which began on August 4, is part of activities to celebrate the Thang Long-Hanoi millennium anniversary and the national year of tourism in Hanoi, said Luu Tien Long, Director of the Hanoi Department of Industry and Commerce, at a press briefing in Hanoi on March 8.
The week is aimed at promoting exports, developing and improving the products of Hanoi craft villages, it is also expected to boost the traditional cultures of the villages over the past 1,000 historic years.
There are also other activities like a contest for artisans on a signature souvenir design for the millennium anniversary, workshops on the potential and development of Hanoi handicraft villages and shows for craft items.
Visitors have the chance to witness the process by which crafts are made, take part in the production themselves and go on a tour of five outstanding craft villages in combination with other tourist sites around Hanoi.
The week will last until August 9.
Book fair introduces international titles
New titles by both local and international writers will be a treat that avid readers look forward to the opening of the sixth Ho Chi Minh Book Fair later this month.
The number of stands will increase by 15 percent over last year to 384 and 31 foreign publishers from the UK, the US, France, China, Germany, Spain and other countries will participate in the event.
Vinabooks, the country’s biggest online bookstore, will introduce Pulitzer-winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz, which rankes among top ten works of the decade.
Translations of a three part detective series by Ireland’s Benjamin Black and a cowboy trio by American’s Comac McCarthy will also make their debut at the event by courtesy of Vinabook.
Chibooks, which is taking part in the event for the first time, will showcase two heavyweights including the US’s Rick Riordan’s The Lightning of Thief, which was adapted to become a Holywood blockbuster and Chinese writer Mo Yan’s The Frog, known as China’s best seller.
Art exhibitions to open in HCM City
HCM City art lovers are in for a treat with two new exhibitions, one of which displays works by 44 women painters to greet International Women’s Day on March 8.
The female artists are presenting 68 paintings presented in silk and oil as well as statues and earthenware at the exhibition, which has opened at the city’s Fine Arts Association.
The works share common themes and subject matters, including an obvious interest in flowers, still life, peaceful landscapes, the turbulence and the beauty of life and, most notably, a strong female world view.
The exhibition, which is at the Fine Arts Association, 218 A Pasteur Street, District 3, will last until Match 15.
The exhibition at the Fine Arts College, 5 Phan Dang Luu Street in Binh Thanh District will last until March 15.
According to sources from the Fine Arts Association, several exhibitions will be held in the city this month, including a solo exhibition of painter Nguyen Hung Trinh from the south central province of Khanh Hoa from March 23 to April 1, and a joint exhibition featuring works by painters of HCM City-based Mekong Art Club and painters from the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang from March 11 to 19.
