Junior colleges “buy” students

Universities and junior colleges have just two days more to receive registrations, but few have high hopes of enrolling enough students. Polytechnical, social science and foreign languages are the fields most lacking in students.

 

Acceptance letters

 

H. H, a student in Hai Phong City, was very sad when she was told that she had failed the exam to enter the Business Administration Junior College.

 

In mid-September, H. was stunned to receive notice that she had successfully been enrolled to the Trade and Tourism Junior College.  She had not taken the college’s exam and had not registered there under her second choice.

 

N.T from Hanoi was also very surprised when 10 junior colleges and technical schools located in Hanoi and neighboring provinces accepted her as a student. N.T only received 10 marks on three exam subjects, meaning she failed to meet junior college requirements.

 

She could not understand these invitations because she had only registered to study at one college, and yet 10 others had invited her to become a student and knew where to send the acceptance letters.

 

T. wondered if she should enroll at one of these schools. She read somewhere that many schools try to attract as many students as possible to get tuition from them, but care little about the quality of training.

 

Truth in Advertising?

 

Deputy President of the Trade and Tourism Junior College Nguyen Quoc Tien admitted that his college has contacted students who failed the exams to the Finance and Business Administration Junior College because they do not have enough students.

 

Tien stressed that the college only invites the students, whereas students have the right to decide on whether to accept or not.

 

Bui Van Cam, President of the Finance and Business Administration College, denied any cooperation. He said that his college has been following the current regulations on student enrollment and that his college has not provided student information to the Trade and Tourism Junior College.

 

An anonymous source said that the colleges “purchase” lists of failed students and then work with “collaborators” to persuade students to register.

 

Collaborators receive a “commission,” or half the enrollment fee of every student they convince to enroll.

 

A collaborator revealed that some private colleges pay big sums of money to persuade larger schools with abundant students to “transfer” their excess students.
