Holiday rush leaves visitors stranded in central provinces

VnnNews – Many people working or studying in the southern provinces who went to their hometowns in the central region are unable to return after Tet because they can not get seats on buses.

Hundreds have been queuing up at bus stations or at roadsides to return to HCM City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc but are unable to get tickets.

The problem is worse on days deemed to be auspicious to begin the journey – like Wednesday which is the fourth day of the lunar New Year.

On the day, hundreds lined up along Highway No 1A in Da Nang, waiting for buses but many were unable to get on.

Le Quynh Nga, who was stranded in Quang Nam Province before catching a bus at Hoa Cam T-junction in Da Nang, said she and her sister were unable to get a bus going to Dong Nai Province despite waiting since dawn.

Though the fourth was the best day to begin their trip, they decided to wait until the next day when buses became less crowded, she said.

Hundreds of others also had to postpone their trips. Nguyen Trong Hiep, who was waiting for a bus with his family of 10 in Quang Nam Province’s Dien Ban District, said they did not get one the whole morning.

All the buses from Da Nang to HCM City were full, with even seats reserved for babies being taken, he said.

Transport authorities blamed the situation on an unexpected surge in the number of people travelling to the central region.

Truong Thi Ha, deputy director of the Da Nang Bus Station Management and Transport Joint Stock Company, said the number of passengers was much higher than last year. All seats had been sold out for the first 10 days of the New Year, she said, with many booking seats on popular buses even before Tet.

Her company was operating hundreds of extra buses to HCM City and southern provinces to ease the problem, she added.
