It is expected that 9000 children will attend the first day of school in Binh Tan district in HCM City, while the primary schools in the district are only supposed to accommodate 4000 students. The same situation is occuring in Tan Phu, Thu Duc and Go Vap districts.

Number of 1st grade students increasing too rapidly

Tan Phu proves to be the district that has the fastest growing number of first graders every year. The past few years have consistently seen the number of first grade students increases by almost 1000 students per year.

According to Ta Tan, Head of the Tan Phu Education Sub-department, it is expected that some 7500 students will go to the first grade in the 2010-2011 school year.

Nguyen Trong Cuong, Head of the Thu Duc Education Sub-department, expresses concerns about the almost 7000 students that will begin the first grade this school year, an increase of 800 students compared to the 2009-2010 school year.

Similarly, In Go Vap district, 6000-7000 students will go to the first grade this year.

According to Nguyen Hoai Chuong, Deputy Director of the HCM City Education and Training Department, the number of first grade students increases rapidly in many districts because of the increasingly high number of families immigrating to the area. Chuong said that though the local authorities have been trying to build more schools, the number of new schools simply cannot meet the increasing demand.

Classes full

In order to receive all students, many schools have to have fill classes with high numbers of students.

The number of students per class in the schools in Go Vap district has been increasing steadily since 2004, while very few new schools have been built. The number of students per class has increased from 43.3 in 2004-2005 school year to 45.6 in 2009-2010. Meanwhile, at An Hoi School, every single class has more than 50 students.

An Hoi Primary School is infamous for being the school with the highest number of students, 5300 students in 103 classes. Meanwhile, Luong The Vinh School in Go Vap district will have to take a certain number of students of An Hoi Primary School this year because An Hoi has become overloaded.

Ta Tan from Tan Phu education sub-department also said that only special classes, such as intensive English classes will have 35 students per class, while other classes with have more than 45 students in each.

Also according to Tan, only one out of 14 schools in the district has been able to comply with national standards, because other schools all are overloaded and cannot meet the requirement on the maximum number of students per class.
