The number had remained high since Tet – in mid-February – he said, adding this was not the normal season for the two diseases.
Dr Tran Van Ngoc, head of the HCM City Hospital for Tropical Diseases’ Pediatric Ward A, also said the number of children admitted with meningitis and encephalitis had been high in recent weeks.
He attributed it to weather being unusually warm. Khanh said if patients were not treated in time, the diseases could threaten their life, cause paralysis and severe damage to the nervous system, resulting in hearing loss, dementia, learning disabilities and other serious problems.
Currently, the hospital was treating seven meningitis and encephalitis patients who are in serious condition, he added.
Parents should ensure their children get Japanese encephalitis vaccine when they were one year old and all other vaccines at two, he said.
Failure to vaccinate children was one of the main reasons for the increase in the incidence of meningitis and encephalitis, he added.
“When children have high fever for one or two days, parents should immediately bring them to hospitals, while any disease involving their ear, nose or throat should to be treated properly to prevent meningitis,” he warned.
