Students register to attend exam preparation classes |
Nguyen Quang Ninh, a lecturer at the exam prep centre organized by Hanoi University of Education, described it as a “small society” with many classes of people. Ninh observed that there are three main types of students. The first, diligent students, go there to learn to prepare for upcoming exams. The second are students who come for relaxation and pleasure. The remaining students are those who do not want to learn, but are forced by their parents force to come.
Teacher Tran Thanh Xuan has 30 year of experience in preparing students for university entrance exams and is teaching at many exam preparation centres. Xuan agreed that there are many classes of students, some coming from
Xuan noted that many come to throw money away. These students receive money from parents and do nothing except the travel, while parents think that their children are studying hard in
In fact, the students do not intend to prepare for the exams. They come to
According to Xuan, learning seems to be a heavy burden for many students. These students are regularly seen nodding off or disrupting in class. Some students spend class time teasing each other.
Another group of students consider exam preparation classes as places for dating. A lot of couples forget where they are and act as if they were in a park and kiss each other in the classes. Some days ago, Xuan witnessed some students caught up in a jealous scene in the classroom next door.
According to Ninh, only the students from poor families are studying hard to prepare for exams, because they treasure every dong they spend. Those students who failed university entrance exams last year also work hard, because they learned a lesson last year.
Ninh added that serious students always come to classes early and they always choose seats near the lecturers to hear more clearly and avoid students who always make a fuss.
There are not many serious students in exam prep classes. Teachers complain that, on average, only 1/3 of the students are serious. In general, classes for students who plan to take C group exams (literature, history and geography) have better discipline than classes for A group exams (mathematics, physics and chemistry).
Meanwhile, many students have decided to review for exams at home instead of going to exam preparation centres.
