Nga confirmed the fatality at the weekly meeting of the steering committee on the A/H1N1 flu pandemic prevention yesterday in Ha Noi.

The nine-year-old boy, who lived in Don Riu hamlet, Hang Gon commune, Long Khanh Township, fell ill on August 28 and was hospitalised at Long Khanh General Hospital on September 2 with a high fever. One day later, the patient was sent to the Dong Nai Children’s Hospital in a deep coma, with respiration failure and cardiac collapse.

The patient died yesterday after a week in A/H1N1 isolation.

Deputy Health Minister Trinh Quan Huan said that the ministry would send an inspection team to investigate such fatal cases in the south, especially in regards to the young boy.

The Ministry of Health yesterday reported 110 new A/H1N1 flu cases, bringing the nation’s total to 4,060, including five fatalities.

Other concerns

The number of people contracting dengue fever would continue to increase in the foreseeable future due to heavy rains, according to Le Truong Giang, deputy head of the HCM City’s Health Department.

At a meeting held yesterday, the department and leaders of various health centres discussed the state of epidemics – dengue fever, hand-foot-mouth disease and A/H1N1 flu – in HCM City.

The number of people infected with dengue fever so far this year was up 39 per cent over 2008, said Nguyen Dac Tho, deputy head of the city’s Preventive Health Centre. Districts 8, 9, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and Binh Tan had been particularly hard hit, he said.

Previously, the disease had occurred mostly in children, but an increasing number of adults were now contracting the disease due to changes in weather, he said.

The city had eight dengue-related fatalities in the first eight months of this year, double the number in the same period last year.

The peak season of dengue fever was expected to be between the end of September and the beginning of November.
