“Bomb” – recalls war in peace time

Last updated: Thursday, March 25, 2010 |

An installation art exhibition named “Bom” (Bomb) opened on March 24 at the Viet Art Centre, 42 Yet Kieu, Hanoi.

Artist Pham Van Truong or Truongart.

“Bomb” is a special composite work made from 60 square meters of glass pieces installed like bomb craters after an explosion. The bombs are glued onto a composite plastic cover scattered with blood-red paint.

The work brings visitors a reminder of the effects of war, a living message where they can see distorted and fractured images of themselves in the broken pieces of glass, signifying that everyone is an incomplete work because of war. The broken glass images also remind viewers that people are unexploded bombs containing great hopes and aspirations that they forget because of the cycle of life.

“Bomb” is the work of Pham Van Truong or Truongart, 28, who suffered great losses as a result of war. His grandmother was burned by napalm and his grandfather was killed by a bomb.

“The war has passed, but its consequences still linger today,” he remarked. “I feel the pain and serious impact of the war on many generations of Vietnamese, and also in the hearts and minds of people around the world.”

The event, sponsored by the Vietnam-Denmark Cultural Development and Exchange Fund (CDEF), will run till March 30.

Truong, from the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh, graduated from the Hanoi Industrial Art University. He is one of the founders and masters of website mythuatvietnam.infor and the founder of Blackart group.

Since 2005, Truong has given some installation, performance and video art shows. He won first prize in the Performance Art Talent Show 2008 held by CDEF. Truong is working on a big project called “Question Marks” with the assistance of the Goethe Institute in Hanoi.
