Artist opens first exhibition at age 71

After five decades of drawing, painter Trang Phuong organized his first exhibition at the age of 71 to introduce his paintings and sketches entitled “Vietnam – My Country”.

VnnNews – After five decades of drawing, painter Trang Phuong organized his first exhibition at the age of 71 to introduce his paintings and sketches entitled “Vietnam – My Country”.

The exhibition will open on July 3 at the HCM City Museum of Art.

Born in 1939 in Binh Duong province, Trang Phuong joined the war of resistance against the US at the age of 16. Most of his paintings, hence, featured scenes from the war.

In 1959, he graduated as a top student of Binh Duong Art Practice School and was recruited to Saigon Art College. In 1961, he was chosen to study water-colour painting in Japan, but he refused in order to remain in Saigon and participate in the war.

In 1962, he was one of the three artists who set up the Southern Vietnam Liberation Painting Room. He took part in many campaigns during the Vietnam War like Phuoc Long-Dong Xoai, Mau Than General Offensive Campaign in 1968.

In 1971, the artist moved northward to work as the chief of the Southern Literary and Art Camp. He graduated from Hanoi Art University in 1973 and went to Bulgaria to complete a doctoral thesis at Bulgarian Art Academy, graduating in 1979.

Trang Phuong’s artworks about the Vietnam War are kept at the Vietnam Museum of Art, Bulgarian Museum of Art and HCM City Museum of Art.

At the age of 71, he is still drawing at his home in District 3, HCM City.
